Getting Value Out Of Your Credit Cards With The Airlines

Some of the first reward credit cards were airline rewards credit cards. The airlines already had their loyalty programs set up, and all the banks had to do was to tie in with them. In the beginning, you earned a set number of points, and then you booked a ticket. Most of the time, you just had to name your flight. I can remember booking a flight using miles in 1997 and being offered several different choices for travel that same day! Those were the good old days. Today’s airline rewards landscape has changed dramatically, and smart reward card holders must change their habits to continue to get decent value from their miles earned through credit card rewards.

Deflation Is Rampant

Today, there are so few awards available for 25,000 miles, that their value is hovering at just a little over 1 penny per mile. For any kind of last minute or multi-leg itinerary, the legacy carriers are going to ask for 40,000 or 50,000 miles. The worst is Delta, followed closely by United, US Airways, and Continental. O

Take the sting out of credit card charges

Dealing with a 200 credit card sale costs a business 2. So why are we surcharged up to 10 by airlines, train companies, ticket agencies and utilities among others?

The issue is on the radar at the Office of Fair Trading after lobby group Which? launched a ‘super-complaint’ this month, claiming that the charges are far higher than the true cost to the retailer of processing the transaction.

The cost of handling card payments varies with the size of the company or retailer and the fees charged by the payments giants such as Visa and MasterCard. Typically, costs are between one and 2.5% of the transaction for credit cards and pennies for debit card sales.

But many companies have boosted card payment charges dramatically, sparking accusations that they are simply pumping up profits at the customers’ expense.

For example, experts estimate it costs an airline such as Ryanair about 2 or 3 for a credit card booking of 200.

A credit card in the Discover More Card series that offers new cardmembers a 0% APR on balance transfers for 24 months will remain in the current credit card marketplace after all.

The credit card offer was originally slated to run for a limited time only – from January 1, 2011 through February 28, 2011 – but the offer has now been extended for an unknown period of time.

In addition to offering 0% intro APR on balance transfers for 24 months, this credit card deal also offers (as of today, March 1, 2011), a 0% intro APR on purchases for 6 months and up to 5% cash back on purchases. After the introductory period is up, the regular APR for this card will be a variable APR of 11.99% – 20.99% (as of today, March 1, 2011).

Following the changes associated with the CARD Act, some predicted the end of zero interest balance transfers as they had previously been known. But that has not proved true.

Balance transfer credit card offers remain strong in the current marketplace.

From U.S. government “bail-outs” to new checking and credit card account regulations, the banking industry was bombarded with changes in 2010. As any experienced banker will attest, when serious changes come from the federal government, they are seldom beneficial to financial institutions.
