In the past year, many Americans sought to compare credit card offers and sent in applications, only to find themselves shut out from the payment system.

However, with the economic recovery just beginning, credit card companies are looking to the new year as a time for re-evaluating past strategies to draw in and keep more customers. Many issuers have their eye on the next big innovation as they realize what works today may not be the best strategy to pursue tomorrow.

Andrew Davidson, Mintel Comperemedia senior vice president, outlined what he expects to be the dominating credit card trends of 2011 in his recent webinar, “Credit Card Stratgey: A New Era for Loyalty Marketing,” industry news source Convenience Store News reports. In this discussion, he highlighted a shifting landscape, fierce competition and the need to build customer relationships.

Do you give your credit card a workout? Are you more likely to whip out your Visa, American Express or Discover card than a $10 or $20 bill to pay for everything from groceries to books to new shoes?

Then credit cards that offer cash-back bonuses are perfect for you. These cards provide refunds (up to 5% cash back) with every dollar you spend. You’ll eventually receive your cash-back bonus, in the form of a credit to your account or a paper check mailed to your address, after you complete a specific dollar amount of purchases.

Certain cash-back cards, though, are considered better than others. Three of the top-tier cards out there are the Discover More card, Chase Freedom Visa card and Chase Ink Cash Back Business Card. Each card provides consumers with a $100 cash-back bonus for meeting certain requirements.

But while these cards are similar, they each have enough quirks to set them apart from their competitors.

This is a guest post from frequent traveler and blogger Phil Taylor of PT Money. Love to travel? Make sure you know about the best travel rewards credit cards so that you can earn top reward miles or earn cash back on your travel.

When I find extra money in my monthly budget I like to spend it on travel. There are so many places I want to explore, but I don’t like wasting money on over-priced travel expenses. A few weeks before you plan to book your travel, connect with the various travel companies and businesses via their social media profiles.

Know the airline you want to fly? Great! Find their Facebook fan page or Twitter profile and sign up. You might just get a good deal for your efforts. If not

In recent months, a number of polls have indicated that consumers plan to reduce their credit card use, take steps to decrease delinquent payments to lenders and conduct more of their holiday shopping with debit cards, cash and checks.

This trend was confirmed this week by the Federal Reserve Board’s 2010 Payments Study.

The study, which is conducted every three years, sought to deduce the annual number, dollar value and composition of consumers’ noncash payments. In its research, the Federal Reserve Board found that from 2006 to 2009, all types of electronic payment methods increased in volume, with the exception of credit cards.

As of 2009, more than three-quarters of all U.S. noncash payments are now made online, marking a 9.3 percent increase over figures from the last study. Read more…
