The “No Hassle Points” program is one of three of Capital One’s credit card rewards program. It really is true to its name, in that it is one of the most simple rewards cards programs out there. It may not be the most profitable; every $1 you spend on your Capital One card is worth one point. In some cases, you must activate the offer through the Rewards portal before you can earn in-store bonus points.

On the plus side, you don’t have to keep track of spending categories or spend a certain amount of money each month before you start earning bonus points. It really is a simple program.

How You Can Earn Points

It’s that time of year again: the time to buckle down and – for real, this time – conquer any credit conundrums plaguing your personal finances.

No matter the quality of your credit score, there is always room for improvement. Once the new year hits, dedicate yourself to a future of great credit and great financial rewards. Here’s how.

If you have bad credit

Work to eliminate credit card debt.
Depending on the amount of credit card debt you have, this may take more than a year. But, like a healthy diet, a slow and steady lifestyle change is the best way to overcome poor spending habits. January 1st marks the first day of a new, healthier credit history.

How:

  • Start paying more than your minimum balance every month. Even just 25 cents a day (under 8 dollars a month) in addition to any minimum payments can slice years and lots of dollars off your total payments.
  • Cut down on your credit card spending. Leave t

Emily’s list: Giving back for the holidays edition

Posted by: John Freycinet  Posted date: December 23, 2010 in Credit Cards Articles

The holiday season is all about giving. We shop like crazy so we can give presents to our friends, family, and loved ones. We bake and serve food to others, sing songs for others and travel to be with loved ones. But many of us also look at this as a time to give back and donate to charities and the needy.

I have walked past several Salvation Army bell-ringers dressed in red this holiday season, and sadly, I rarely have cash to give them. The good news is that we often don’t always need cash in order to give back anymore. Most charities now accept donations via credit card on their websites or through PayPal. You can also find credit cards that donate a percent of spending to charities, ranging from animal rescue to environmental conservation to breast cancer research. Some credit cards allow you to use your credit card rewards for donations to charities or to offset your carbon footprint.

What are you doing this holiday season to give back?

Q: I want to redeem my American Express rewards, but I don’t know how to do this. Help!

A: If you have an American Express card that has a rewards program, once you have accrued enough points, you can redeem them. This is as easy as going to this website.

Once you have logged on to your account, you simply follow the steps to redeem your points. These steps include selecting the membership reward you wish to redeem points for. If you are not already registered, you can access the website and it will help you take care of this process.

The number for local redemption only is 1-800-299-1977.

If you are overseas and need to redeem points, you will need to call +65, then follow that by a “6.” Dial the “6” before you dial the rest of the phone number. Local callers need only to dial 1-800-299-1977.

Remember that American Express has several different cards. You will need to know which card you have before starting the redemption process. Look on t Read more…

MBNA rapped for credit card debt tactics

Credit card group MBNA has been ordered to improve the way it deals with customers struggling to keep up with debt repayments.

The Office of Fair Trading has imposed a series of requirements on the lender after Citizens Advice raised concerns about the way its in-house debt collection arm was handling customers in financial difficulties.

The trading watchdog found when people who could not afford to make their full repayments offered to pay a token sum, the letters MBNA sent to them were so unclear, consumers often could not tell if their offer had been rejected or accepted.

It also failed to follow its own policy on some occasions, by bypassing customers’ appointed representatives, and instead contacting individuals directly.

As a result of the investigation, from January 1 MBNA must make it clearer in letters sent to customers who are in financial difficulties that it will accept partial repayments if they have shown that this is what they can afford to pay.
