What’s in your wallet? That is a popular slogan created by a credit card company to get you thinking about using their rewards credit card. It’s catchy from a marketing perspective, but it is a question you really should ask your self. What is in your wallet? More importantly, what should you really keep in your wallet?

While many of us do not think about the chaos that can be caused by a lost purse or wallet until one actually losses it, this is something to seriously consider. The number of banking products available today compared to the number available just ten years ago is astounding. Online savings accounts and checking accounts have changed the way consumers bank. Now, with the advent of these online accounts, I find myself wondering whether money market accounts are still relevant.

Money Market Accounts Historically

In times past, most financial advisers have touted the money market savings account (often called an MMA) as the way to save money for the short- or medium-term. These accounts have historically had a higher interest rates than standard savings (or passbook savings) and interest-bearing checking accounts. However, today MMA rates are falling behind online checking and savings account rates.

Don’t Be Fooled by Business Credit Card Solicitations Warns Sen. Schumer

Credit card companies are tricking consumers with unsatisfactory solicitations, Senator Charles Schumer (D-NY) explained in a letter sent to the Federal Reserve on Wednesday. In his letter, he revealed that the number of professional and business credit cards sent to consumers skyrocketed in the first quarter because they don’t have to same protections as personal cards.

Are Credit Card Issuers Trying to Bypass the Law?

Despite the many changes that have occurred as a result of the Credit CARD Act, card issuers have apparently been determined to find ways to lure in customers while avoiding all of the rules they’re meant to abide by.

Since many of the guidelines listed in the act don’t apply to business credit cards, companies have opted to distribute new and exciting business and professional credit card offers to non-business consumers, rather than focusing on personal cards.

Credit cards are seen as an essential method of payment for the majority of Americans. Unfortunately, credit cards are not for everybody. There are two groups of people who do not possess a credit card, but probably should some day. The big question is: When do you know when you are ready for a credit card? Let’s take a look.

Credit Cards and Young Adults

As teenagers mature into young adults, managing their finances responsibly is a major achievement. Ideally, the process of understanding money and credit cards should begin at a very young age. Children should be explained how money and credit cards work, and should learn by example as they observe their parents making transactions at retailers and paying their bills at home.

I was given a credit card on my parent’s account when I was in my early teens. I had strict instructions to only use it when I obtained my parent’s permission in advance, or in an emergency.

Universities Profiting Off Student Credit Card Users

Recently a huge arrangement involving selling of names and addresses of students and former students to credit card companies – in exchange for big financial kickbacks – came to light. What surprised everyone is that it is not criminal hackers doing the selling, but it is the prestigious schools themselves.

What it means is that if a child of yours is going to one of the nation’s institutions of higher learning – including some of the most elite colleges and universities in the country – that educational institution may be surreptitiously selling private information about them to credit card companies. The same goes for college alumni, whose names also get traded for cash.

These educational institutions are also giving major credit card companies the right to attend campus events by granting them unique and special access to students.
