The news earlier this month that cyber thieves were able to nab the contact information and credit card numbers of about 1 percent of Citigroup’s customers has made credit-card holders nervous. And why not? Data breaches in which criminals are able to hack onto the online homes of major banking companies have become distressingly common.

The good news, though, is that you can take steps to protect yourself even if hackers are able to steal your account information.

And all you’ll need to do this is a bit of common sense.

The Crimes

The Citigroup data breach is the latest in a series of high-profile online data thefts (Don’t forget about the troubles that the online PlayStation Network suffered in April with its own security breach).

In the CitiGroup case, computer hackers in early June breached the bank’s security systems and gained access to the data of about 200,000 credit-card customers in North America.

Verdict: American Express’ prepaid card offers the convenience and service of an American Express charge card, with accessibility for anyone, regardless of credit history. Unlike the American Express gift cards, which carry a $5.95 activation fee, the card is free to order.

Record number of balance transfer cards

Borrowers now have a record pick of 54 credit cards offering an interestfree balance transfer term of 12 months or more.

The length of time cards are offering zero per cent deals has also increased to a four-year high of, on average, 12.16 months, compared with 9.87 months a year ago, according to figures from comparison site Moneynet.

Barclaycard Platinum has the longest deal, offering 0% on balance transfers for 20 months. It has a 3.2% handling fee, so transferring a balance of 5,000 would cost 160. Purchases during the first three months of opening the account are also free.

Meanwhile, NatWest offers a 0% deal of 18 months on its Platinum Card, with a 2.8% handling fee. So transferring a balance of 5,000 would incur a charge of 140.

The card also has a represent ative APR of 16.6% and 0% on purchases for the first six months.

According to MSN Money, approximately 75% of Americans are receiving an income tax refund. The IRS states that the average refund is $3129, which is a much higher average than even a decade ago.

So what is the average American doing with all that extra cash? Surveys conducted by the banking industry indicate a good share of Americans plan to save their tax refund while a smaller percentage will use their refund to pay off debt. The majority of Americans, however, tend to view their income tax refund checks as a sort of windfall and plan on spending the cash.

On the heels of several other large security breaches, including one involving Gmail and another concerning Sony’s PlayStation Network, comes the hack of Citi’s credit card servers. Thousands of users’ information was compromised, forcing Citi to send out tons of new credit cards. Below are some key facts about the leak, followed by important information for those that were affected.

  • 360,000 accounts, including ones that were already closed, were potentially accessed
  • 217,000 new credit cards were issued
  • About 1% of Citi’s customers were affected
  • Names, account numbers, and contact information were obtained
  • Social Security numbers and card security codes were not
  • Debit card information was reportedly not accessed either
