Consumer Bureau calls for simpler credit card language

Consumers who compare credit card offers have long complained about the overly complicated language used by lenders in disclosure agreements.

However, these consumers may be getting some help from the government, as politicians are increasingly calling for simpler language on credit card applications.

On Thursday, Elizabeth Warren, the newly appointed head of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, voiced her concern over the language used by lenders. In her speech to the Consumer Federation of America, Warren suggested the Credit Card Accountability, Responsibility and Disclosure Act of 2009 may not have gone far enough.

“It is this simple: No customer should be asked to take out a loan without knowing the costs or the risks of the deal,” she said. “And every customer should be able to compare different financial products straight up.”

Warren voiced a disdain for the many lawmakers trying to overturn the legislation, the news source says. Read more…

The huge news of the past week has been the release of classified documents through the site Wikileaks. The thousands of private diplomatic cables that were released reveal foreign policy strategies, military secrets, embarrassingly candid opinions of global leaders and more. Julian Assange, Wikileaks founder, is being pursued by numerous legal entities.

Some the leaks that made the biggest splash were requests from the State Department that diplomats should collect information from their foreign counterparts. They “show Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and her predecessor Condoleezza Rice asking diplomats to collect data ranging from Internet passwords to DNA and iris scans,” according to USA Today. They also were encouraged to collect credit card numbers, frequent flier numbers, work schedules and fingerprints.

Critics say this borders on asking diplomats to be spies. Aaron David Miller of the Woodrow Wilson International Center Center for Scholars told USA Today, “Of what possible utility is a credit card number?

The company has a strange name that sounds like something out of a science fiction movie or your high school calculus class, and you have probably never heard of it and know nothing about what it does. But you can be quite sure that the company named “[x+1] Inc.” knows a thing or two about you.

The company’s own CEO was quoted in the press saying “We never don’t know anything about someone.” That manner of speaking is about as strange as the company name, but what he meant is that his company always knows at least something about everyone – and there is nobody that it does not know something about, including you.

Because of that unique quality the [x+1] might be really cool to “friend” on Facebook or to hire to do undercover work for the CIA. But the revenues of [x+1] don’t come from spy agencies or popularity with the public, but from major credit card issuers. Credit card companies use the sophisticated mathematical formulas the company has created to build profiles of potential credit card customers. The [x+1]has an u

Should you use credit cards for Christmas?

Christmas is the time of year when you may be planning to splash out on presents for your friends and family.

But should you really be using a credit card to plug the gap in your spending?

We don’t advocate using a credit card, unless you can pay off the balance in full, as this leads to the slippery slope towards unmanageable debt.

However, the truth is that many people use credit cards to fund their Christmas spending with the view that they can spread the cost of repaying throughout the year. (Not necessarily a bad idea if you can get an interest-free credit card and keep up with your monthly repayments.)

The best type of credit card for festive spending is one with 0% interest on card purchases. A fair few card providers offer this for an introductory period, usually between nine and 12 months.

The plan should be to cut the card up after you have done your Christmas spending and then pay it off, incurring no extra debt from more purchases.
